Regularly changing the oil in your car can optimize performance and improve gas mileage. More importantly, it can extend the life of the engine. But how do you know that it’s time for an oil change?

If you get your oil changed at a shop, they will typically place a sticker on the top of your windshield indicating the mileage at which you should bring it in for the next oil change. But this is just a general guide. In the meantime, watch out for the following signs.

Signs You Need an Oil Change

Your oil warning light goes on

This is perhaps the most obvious sign that your car needs an oil change. Your oil warning light is located on the dashboard and usually looks like an oil lamp with a small drip of oil pouring out one end. It is most often red in color.

If this light goes on, it can indicate a low oil level. It can also mean you have sufficient oil but are not getting enough oil pressure, sometimes due to a clogged filter.

The oil is dark and dirty

Over time, oil picks up dust and dirt that comes in through the engine. These particles can cause the oil to thicken up like sludge and affect the lubricating ability of the oil. Every so often, remove the dipstick and wipe it clean with a rag or paper towel. Insert it and remove it again. If the oil has an amber color to it and you can see the dipstick through the oil, it should be okay. But if the oil is so dark that you can’t see the dipstick, it may be time for a change.

You hear unusual noises

Among the jobs of motor oil is to provide lubrication to moving engine parts. When your oil loses its ability to do so, those parts begin to grind on each other. Not only will this cause some unusual noises, but it will also cause those parts to wear down much more quickly.

You’re being followed by a trail of smoke

If oil is leaking into the engine or exhaust system, it’s being burned up and emitted out your tailpipe in the form of thick smoke that can be gray or even blue in color.

You smell oil inside the cabin

If oil leaks onto a hot surface under the hood, it can be burned up, and the smell will be noticeable while driving the car.
